Description
Prosperous settlement arose around the postal station named by 3 “tabernae” (taverns) or shops located at the confluence with the Appian way of most interior settlements’ street (Ulubrae, Norba, Cora). Cicero stayed there and cites in three letters written to Attico (II, 10, 12, 13) between 61 and 59 b.C.
Saint Paul, during the journey from Tarsus to Rome, stayed overnight at Tres Tabernae where he met Christians in the area (Atti degli Apostoli XXVIII,15). From early Christian era it was episcopal see, attacked by barbarians first and then Saracens, who completely destroyed it in 868 a.C, when inhabitants left for a safer place, where Cisterna will rise. Many artefacts are returned to the light, among which sepulchral covers, villas, thermal baths, pavings mosaic and a beautiful figurative emblem.
